Curriculum and Common Core State Standards


Curriculum 

All of our curriculum is based on the California Common Core State Standards, which are posted below. 

 

Language Arts- Our series is called Journeys and is by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.  We will focus on literary strategies for comprehension in literature and informational text, vocabulary development, spelling, and Greek and Latin roots.  We also will read Core Literature books like Wonder, Sign of the Beaver, The Cay, and Tuck Everlasting.

 

Writing- We will focus on three main genres of writing which include, narratives, persuasive essays, and informational reports.  We will go through the writing process of prewriting, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing.  Your child will also write a state report and a president report.  Cursive will be practiced as a life skill.

 

Math-  We use Math Expressions from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for our math curriculum.  Our units of study are listed below.  

Unit 1 Addition and Subtraction with Fractions

Unit 2 Addition and Subtraction with Decimals

Unit 3 Multiplication and Division with Fractions

Unit 4 Multiplication with Whole Numbers and Decimals

Unit 5  Division with Whole Numbers and Decimals

Unit 6 Operations and Problem Solving

Unit 7 Algebra, Patterns, and Coordinate Graphs

Unit 8 Measurement and Data

 

Science-  We have adopted Discovery Science Education curriculum. Our units of study are the following:

Unit 1 What is Matter Made of?- Changes to matter, properties of matter, mixtures

Unit 2 Patterns in the Night Sky- Gravity, Earth’s Rotation, The Stars, The Night Sky

Unit 3 From Matter to Organisms- Matter and Energy in Plants, Food Webs, Ecosystems, Matter Cycles, Energy Transfer

Unit 4 Interacting Earth’s Systems- Earth’s Systems Interactions, Water Sources, Reducing the Human Footprint

 

Social Studies- This year, we will focus on Early American History, starting with Native People, British Colonization, The American Revolution, Founding a New Nation, Westward Expansion, and States and Capitals. Our new curriculum is called America's Past by TCI.
