Homework/Grading/Google Classroom

Homework

Homework is whatever is not finished in class each day.  Please refer to your child’s agenda to be aware of daily assignments.  Please check the agenda, then check your child’s homework to see that it is neat, complete, and done correctly, then sign the agenda.  Homework is due and collected first thing each morning. Work is due the day after it is assigned, unless otherwise instructed. A student will be given the opportunity to complete  a late or missing assignment during recess.   Absent students have the same number of days they were absent to return their work for full credit.  If an assignment is missing, it will be given a zero.  If a student makes it up, it will be late and will be given C credit.  Some of the homework will be completed online.  Please let me know if you are having a technology issue at home so we can make other arrangements for your child’s assignment.

Grading

The curriculum moves quickly in 5th grade and students will need to keep up with their school work to keep their grades up.

  • Homework will count as 10%-20% of the grade, depending on the subject and number of assignments.
  • Classwork will count as 30-40% of the grade, depending on the subject and number of assignments.
  • Tests will count as 40%-50% of the grade, depending on the subject and number of assignments.

Be sure to keep up with your student’s agenda!  If your child does not receive a passing grade on an assessment, your child can correct it and return it (or resubmit it if the assessment is in Google Classroom).  If the test was taken on a Friday, your child will have the weekend to correct it.  Otherwise, your child will need to correct it for homework on the day that your child receives the grade.  Daily class assignments should be corrected for “C” credit for homework the day the assignment was given to make sure students learn the concept before moving to the next day's work.  Late work can be turned in for “C” credit. You have a week from the due date of the assignment to correct the work for “C” credit before it no longer will be accepted.

Google Classroom

We will be using Google Classroom this year for certain assignments.  If your child does not finish their work in class, all they need is to have access to any device with a web browser (Google Chrome is most compatible).  Follow the steps below to access Google Classroom at home.
  • Type clever.com into web browser
  • Type “Bimat” if not already selected
  • Login with student email and password (Info found on label inside student Bulldog Folder)
  • Click on Google Classroom
  • Select class with homework
  • Click on Classwork
  • Find assignment

Grades will be available in Powerschool. Please create a Parent Portal account using the directions below to keep up with your child's work and grades.

AR/Reading Homework

I expect students to read 20 minutes nightly with the expectation that they are ready to complete an AR test on the book they read every two weeks.  They should test on 4-5 AR chapter books at their reading level each quarter.

Students will earn awards quarterly for the points they earned.  Every 2 weeks, I will do an AR check in where students will receive the score for the AR test that they took during that 2 week period as a homework grade in the gradebook.  The book will need to be a chapter book at your child’s AR reading level.  For instance, if your child took a test on a book and received a 90% as their score, then their grade will be a 90% for that 2 week AR grading period.

Parent Portal

Parent Portal is necessary for you to keep track of your child’s grades and missing assignments.  I recommend that you download this app onto your phone and check it every Friday to make sure that your child does not have any missing assignments and that their grades are acceptable.  Use the info below to set up the app or to login on our district website.  You will a handout specific to your child in order to set up your account.
